Students should know how garbage should be dealt with

Flor Z. Perolina - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes wants students in public and private schools to be aware of the ill effects of garbage that is discarded unsystematically.

The mayor has proposed that every school in the city should have audio-visual presentations that show the “ill effects of indiscriminate throwing of garbage.

Cortes said it will be part of the city’s information dissemination to address the problem of flooding.

The city government will ask the Department of Education (DepEd) to help implement the plan.

Children according to Cortes are best taught when they are still young about segregation of wastes in separating the bio-degradable from non-biodegradable.

He encouraged film-showing activities in schools to promote proper solid waste management.

“Before, I was against paranoia. Pero pakit-on sad nato usahay ang mga tawo kung unsay pwede mahitabo kung magpataka og labay og basura,” Cortes said.

Cortes blames climate change for the unpleasant situation the Cesar M. Cabahug Elementary School is in.

He said he is not finger-pointing but the flooding in the school has been there before he became mayor.  (FREEMAN)
