Mandaue schools potential firetraps?

Flor Z. Perolina - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Private and public schools in Mandaue City lack fire alarm systems, or are defective if these have any, according to the Bureau of Fire Protection.

To make matters worse, some fire exits are blocked, chief of the Fire Safety Enforcement Section SFO1 Sherwin Porcia said.

Unlike affluent private schools, most public schools lack the ability to get their hands on fire extinguishers, he said.

Porcia said the Bureau of Fire Protection had rejected a plan to convert the stockroom at the Ibabao Elementary School for being unfavorable to students because of poor ventilation and having a low ceiling.

“Lisod man gud kaayo kay amoang gitan-aw para ra baya sa mga bata pud kung amoa to i-approve kay mangapakong ang mga estudyante unya walay ventilation,” Porcia said.

Teachers have also been taught how to use bells when fire alarms fail to work.

Porcia said bells can also be utilized during calamities.

By the end of June, fire and earthquake drills will take effect in public and private schools.  (FREEMAN)
