Man braves fire, saves son

CEBU, Philippines - A boy sustained second degree burns from a fire that destroyed an upholstery shop along Herman Cortes street in barangay Subangdaku, Mandaue City yesterday morning.

Irvy John Castardo was asleep in a hammock when the fire started.

 His father, Romeo Castardo, owner of the shop, braved the fire to save him.

 The boy was brought to the Mandaue City District Hospital.

Aside from the shop, three houses were totally destroyed, while two sustained damages.

Fire investigators placed damage to property at P60,000.

The fire along Hernan Cortes Street yesterday morning was the second fire to hit the city in less than 15 hours.

 The first fire occurred in Semense Compound, sitio Mount Pinatubo, barangay Tipolo at around 6:50 p.m. Sunday night.

SFO1 Cipriano Codilla said the fire started in the house of Conchita Bungo, 45.

The cause has yet to be determined.

Firefighters controlled the fire inside 35 minutes but by then it had already destroyed seven houses, damaged two others, and burned two jeepneys and two multicabs.

No one was reported injured.

The fire spread to two jeepneys owned by a certain Julian Arpon and two multicabs owned by Nicolas Ouano.

The cost of damage was put at P120,000. (FREEMAN)
