CEBU, Philippines - The idea to reopen the old Tabunok public market, which has been proposed by first district Congressman Eduardo R. Gullas and Talisay City Mayor Socrates C. Fernandez, has gained support from the city council.
Vice Mayor Alan G. Bucao, chairman of the committee on public order and safety, said the move to reopen the Tabunok market only shows the genuine leadership being displayed by the leaders in the district and in the city.
“The reopening of the Tabunok Market is truly an epitome of the city government officials’ thrust that genuine leadership is not the display of power but that of service,†Bucao said in his proposed resolution No. 2013-15-1.
It has been almost two years since the city government transferred the Tabunok Public Market to Macapagal-Gullas public market in barangay Lagtang.
Close to 100 market vendors in Lagtang have met with Gullas to request for the reopening of the old Tabunok Public Market.
But Gullas said that before the transfer could be made, he said the Tabunok market needs to undergo improvements such as re-installation of power and water supply, fixing the roof and floor, and have the Talisay City engineering office check the structural safety of the market building.
The city engineering department is already checking the structural safety and stability of the old public market building.
Gullas said he intends now to convert the Lagtang public market into an extension of the Talisay City College (TCC). (FREEMAN)
