CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Labor and Employment averted a workers’ strike at the Mactan Isla Resorts in Lapu-Lapu City, with the establishment offering workers an P8-million economic package.
Had it pushed through, the strike would have been the first one this year in Cebu.
The workers union is affiliated with the Associated Labor Union-Trade Union Congress of the Philippines.
ALU-TUCP spokesperson Art Barrit said the signing of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the union and the management will be held on April 30.
“It is a good thing that the management and the workers have decided to resolve their conflict and come up with an acceptable CBA that will effectively identify the terms and conditions of employment,†said DOLE secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz in a statement.
Last January 24, the employees’ union filed a notice of strike against the company it couldn’t resolve issues, specifically involving payment of service charge.
The DOLE statement said that upon the intervention of the National Conciliation and Mediation Board with a series of conciliation conferences, facilitated by NCMB-7 regional director or Edmundo Mirasol, the parties finally agreed on March 22 to resolve their labor dispute and enter into a CBA.
Barrit said the settlement stands to benefit 65 to 230 workers working for the company. — (FREEMAN)
