CEBU, Philippines - At least 3,000 senior citizens in Naga City received P500 each as Christmas gift from Naga City Mayor Valdemar Chiong at the newly-finished Enan Chiong Activity Center in barangay East Poblacion.
The city had allocated almost P5 million for the elderly.
Chiong believes it is the duty and responsibility of the city government to ensure that the elderly are extended benefits and services they deserve under the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010 or Republic Act (RA) 9994.
Chiong said this idea was sparked by the fact that some of the elderly are suffering from poverty and therefore deserve full government support during their twilight years.
The senior citizens in the city have a building they can call it as their own.
Chiong reminded officials of the local senior citizens group to take care of the new building like it was their own home.
He has given them authority to collect fees from the building’s parking space as part of their income-generating activity. (FREEMAN)
