Checkpoints in Talisay as dawn masses begin

Garry B. Lao - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The police in Talisay City will put up checkpoints for added visibility as Catholics prepare to attend the first of nine “Simbang Gabi (Dawn Masses)” tomorrow.

A religious tradition where Filipinos hear mass for nine consecutive days starting December 16, the “Simbang Gabi” is expected to draw people to churches all over the country, said Talisay City police inspector Margienett Yosores.

Yosores said there will be men to be on the lookout particularly for petty thieves taking advantage of crowds at churches.

Millions are expected to observe the “Simbang Gabi,” which is considered a unique Filipino Christmas tradition.

For nine days starting December 16, Filipinos will flock to churches before dawn to attend Masses to welcome the birth of Christ.

Filipino Catholics have adopted this tradition from Mexico.

The changing of times does not break the preservation of celebrating “Simbang Gabi,” although it is celebrated in new ways.

Still, the tradition of “Simbang Gabi” continues.

But it will not only be the police that will ensure the security of churchgoers, said Yosores.

She said barangays have been urged to join the campaign against crime during the holidays.  (FREEMAN)
