Informal settlers in Mandaue demolish houses voluntarily

Flor Z. Perolina - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines -  The owners of 100 houses that were built within the three-meter easement zone of the Butuanon River in barangay Maguikay, Mandaue City gladly tore down their homes yesterday in response to demolition notices sent by city legal officer Giovanni Tianero.

The homeowners, most of whom are identified with the Maguikay-Tabok Homeowners Association, have a ready lot at the 6.5 hectare relocation site in barangay Paknaan.

Association president Abel Tangayan said they willingly knocked down their homes because they know their lives are at risk being at a danger zone, and that they can build houses at the relocation site with the use of the materials from the houses that they have taken apart. (FREEMAN)
