Here comes 2026
Over the holidays, I had the chance to talk to the parents of one of our national athletes who are now US based. They talked about the struggles they had when their son was just starting with the national team.
Compared to other sports where Fil-foreign athletes are pampered, this kid who’s not alien to larang, utan Bisaya and mais, had the going rough during the early stages. His parents had to scramble for fares for his international matches, with the NSA concerned telling them that the refund will come later. The same discouraging stories we often hear about most of our athletes whose parents are in the middle-income bracket.
Favoritism was also mentioned, which had been going on since whenever that there was a dakul by an elected lawmaker to a sporting official at the recent SEAG because an athlete noted to be less skilled was made to compete over a much-seasoned teammate. Politics has badly tainted sports.
This bemedalled athlete, currently training out of the country, plays one of the water sports and good thing he has sponsors which take care of his international tournaments when he’s not representing our colors. A cousin’s husband, who has connections at Wall Street, offered to introduce him to them for support and promotion.
It’s the most wonderful and happy time of the year and many of us do away with other celebrations but not the Christmas Noche Buena. Family members come from different parts of the world and gather around with everyone for that once-a-year happy meal.
A wise lady insisted on a P500 Noche Buena feast which she said is based on the price guide of basic Noche Buena essentials her department provided. Majority of us prepare for this occasion, find ways to have a meaningful celebration and, so, how was your P500 Noche Buena considering that prices had gone up, proportionate to the unstable fuel prices.
Optimists always see something bright when the new year comes around and I do hope that this year will get better, typhoons, floods and earthquakes notwithstanding. With the way the powers-that-be had been handling the plunder of the nation, this will still be a prosperous year for the shameless billionaires and their minions.
With the highest official of the land and the secretary of that government institution central to the issue making noise about the biggest fish spending Christmas behind bars, it remains lip service. If they meant that lady who loved an umbrella that comes with a free car, she’s small fry compared to those who had reportedly fled the country.
But still, a happy 2026 to all!
