Yulo’s Cebuano coach to support Cebu City’s gymnastics program

CEBU, Philippines — Allen Aldrin Castañeda, the Cebuano coach of Paris Olympics double gold medalist Carlos Yulo, has committed himself to support Cebu City’s grassroots program under the Cebu Gymnastics Academy at the Labangon Elementary School.

Castañeda, a former gymnast who is now part of the national team coaching staff, guided Yulo to a historic performance at the Paris Games nearly a month ago.

As his way of paying back the Cebuanos, Castañeda has accepted the challenge of Philippine Sports Commissioner Edward Hayco to help a pool of young talents in their training at least once a month.

Castañeda believes that Cebu has a big potential in gymnastics but emphasized that it will take a lot of hardwork and patience to build a champion.

“Dili na siya basta-basta, trabahoon gyud na. Daghan ta diri’g potential, kinahanglan tagaan gyud na’g pagtagad,” said Castañeda.

Castañeda hopes that the academy will be opened to all who are interested to learn and grow as a gymnast.

“Mo-collaborate ko with the coaches diri,” added Castañeda.

Once he spots potential athletes for the national team, Castañeda said he will be requesting their association to house them and provide for their needs while in Manila.
