SWU-Phinma bids goodbye to CESAFI

CEBU, Philippines — The Southwestern University (SWU)-Phinma will ne longer be part of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) starting in the league’s Season 24 this year.

The management of SWU-Phinma has made known its decision in a letter to CESAFI commissioner Felix “Boy” O. Tiukinhoy, Jr. dated March 22, 2024 but was only furnished by Tiukinhoy to the sports media covering the league on Friday, May 3.

“This decision is mainly to fully and effectively address out students’ needs as part of our commitment to achieving our mission, that is to making lives better through education,” said SWU-Phinma Chief Operating Officer Cheryl P. Chan.

“We realized that the challenges faced by our students and their families during the pandemic continue to this day. And there is now an urgent need to provide deeper and more focused attention on our students’ welfare to ensure that they have a fruitful learning journey and achieve their own and their families’ dreams.”

To achieve this, Chan said they need to prioritize their efforts and limited resources to developing programs that will improve key services to their students, enabling them to have a more enriching learning journey and personal growth experience.

As one of the founding member schools of Cebu’s premiere inter-school athletic league, SWU-Phinma remains grateful for the success the university has achieved, and for the valuable experience it provided to its student athletes.

“Though the CESAFI, the university produced quality athletes, some even achieving national fame. As the university greatly benefited from CESAFI, we have that we contributed to its success and esteemed reputation,” Chan ended.
