Niños are virtual champs

2019 CVIRAA Meet

DUMAGUETE CITY, Philippines — The Cebu City Niños are the virtual champion after building an insurmountable lead in the penultimate day of the 2019 Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) Meet at the Lamberto Macias Sports Complex.

Cebu City now stands with 62 gold, 31 silver and 40 bronze medals. Lapu-Lapu City is trailing at second with 44-18-13 gold-silver-bronze medals, while Bohol is at third with 38-37-37 medals.

Cebu City’s elementary football squad powered by Don Bosco Technical College booters highlighted the team’s strong push yesterday after winning the championship at the expense of Team Mandaue, 5-3, at the Foundation Preparatory Academy.

Cebu Niños also sealed their succesful campaign in athletics with two golds and three silvers.

Martchan Torregosa, Kier Ivan Apostol, Alexander Alvarez and Oliver James Angco put their acts together to win the 4x100m relay in 44.09 seconds followed by Bohol (44.88) and Cebu Province (45.31).

In the distaff side, the team of Mary Joy Loberanis, Sheina Kate Responso, Garcia Louraine Yvonne Garcia and Jossie Inemedo topped the 4x400m relay with a time of four minutes and 18.47 seconds.

Archer Zach Torreon also delivered gold for TCC in the 70m event. He also led the secondary boys team to a gold medal finish in the team event.Aside from the two golds, Cebu City archers also got a silver in the mixed team competition and a bronze from their secondary girls squad.

Cebu City badminton bets also handed a total of four golds at the Riverside Badminton court after dominating both singles and doubles event of the secondary division while their gymnasts handed an additional 11 golds mainly through the efforts of Eunie Soronio and Jeanne Rallos.

Elizabeth Abarquez, for her part, claimed a gold medal in her final CVIRAA as she clobbered Lapu-Lapu City’s Princess Nicole Dela Rita, 8-2 at the Praxevilla tennis courts. The duo of Vinz Lominoque and John Paul Sinambong also snatched the gold in the boys doubles after upending Bohol netters, 8-4.

Cousins Aaron Kevin Tabora and Gio John Manito also bagged the gold medal in elementary doubles against Naga’s Lloyd Canoy and Prince Galleon, 8-4.

In volleyball, Cebu City girls silenced host Dumaguete City, 25-23, 25-15, 25-13, to win the secondary gold.

Over at the Aquatic Center, the Ninos grabbed an additional six silvers from Quintin Sabalandre in the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 5:39.59, Marielle Estreba in the 200-meter backstroke with 2:45.69, Gian Marco Young in the 100-meter butterfly with 1:21.39, Gil Talisaysay in the 100-meter butterfly with 1:03.62, elementary boys 100-meter freestyle relay in 5:21.74 and  secondary girls 100-meter freestyle with a time of 4:42.36.

TCC’s lone man standing in boxing, John Kevin Jimenez ended his bid with a silver in the school boys’ 44-46-kilograms. Wensly Intong, Clark Malones and Jerome Caberte contributed with bronze medals.

Meanwhile, Cebu Province stunned Cebu City girls basketball team, 76-57, in the finals at the Tinago Gym. (FREEMAN)
