Bacolod Boxing Council
I’m sure you’re familiar with the World Boxing Council (WBC), but have you heard of the Bacolod Boxing Council? Well, not just yet, it’s still in the planning stage. The idea pop out when city councilor Claudio Puentevella punched fellow councilor Dindo Ramos in a middle of a heated exchange while the Bacolod City council was in session. Just last week, Claudio, son of my good friend and former congressman and mayor Monico Puentevella punched Ramos in the left cheek. Ramos said he will sue Puentevella for direct assault before the Ombudsman. Another good friend, Bing Leonardia, the current mayor, said this is the first time he has heard of this kind of incident. Well, Claudio was probably influenced by Monico’s love of boxing. When Monico was a commissioner in the PSC, he supported boxing and football. If you don’t know, Negros Occidental is home to some of the best boxers in the country. Here are a few boxing greats who hailed from Negros Island. Pancho Villa, Onyok and Roel Velasco, Leopoldo Cantancio, Leopoldo Serrantes, Dodie Boy Penalosa, Gerry Penalosa (San Carlos City, Neg. Occ), Elias Recaido, Genesis Servania, Arthur Villanueva, Aston Palicte and Donnie Nietes. Two other good friends Eddie Villanueva and Mondio Guanzon became GAB chairmen. In nearby Iloilo, William Magahin and Bong Santillan became champions too. So let’s organize the Bacolod Boxing Council (BBC) “Ti, anong say mo Bidoy?.”
