TCC athletes top Batang Pinoy Visayas qualifiers

DUMAGUETE CITY, Philippines — Team Cebu City athletes showed that they are still the best in the Visayas region as they reigned supreme in the 2017 Batang Pinoy-Visayas qualifiers, which formally came to a close yesterday at Governor Mariano Paredes Memorial  Stadium here.

Cebu City bagged the overall championship with 49 gold, 59 silver and 69 bronze medals. Host Dumaguete City settled with 41 gold, 29 silver and 44 bronze medals, while Cebu Province secured the third spot with 39-37-44 gold-silver-medal tally.

Even if they were ahead by a mile, TCC still harvested medals in the final day for a dominant finish.

Eljey Dan Tormis scored a double gold via the  table tennis singles event when he outsmarted Mandaue City’s Henze Dominique Lucero, 3-0, and another gold in the mixed doubles along Kirzza Acaylar.

Edelyn Atienza also snared another gold medal in the chess after winning the standard category. This is her second gold after claiming the gold in the Blitz event.

Two of Atienza’s teammates, Jave Mareck Peteros also topped the final events in chess while Marphine Faith Mangubat settled silver behind Danao City’s Alphecca Gonzales. San Fernando’s Glesit Marie Tatoy ended with a bronze medal.

TCC girls basketball squad also delivered a gold as they turn back Cebu Province, 56-48, but the latter immediately bounced back after claiming the boys championship against Mandaue, 64-58.

Cebu City’s boys volleyball team settled for silver after bowing to Antique in the finals, 21-25, 25-19, 10-15 while its sepak takraw bets handed an additional bronze.

Cebu Province girls softball squad shone as they upended Cebu City, 10-3, in the finals. Cebu Province also claimed the gold medal in the baseball event at the expense of Norther Samar, 14-4.

Mandaue City, for its part, improved its medal haul and standing to sixth overall with 29 gold, 23 silver and 20 bronze through the efforts of their arnis and badminton bets.

The wards of badminton coach Eddie Estoconeng delivered in the final day after grabbing four gold, one silver and three bronze medals.

Lapu-lapu City placed seventh overall with a 23-12-20 gold-silver-bronze medal performance. Jerish John Velarde contributed three golds for Lapu-lapu City in chess.

Meanwhile, Danao City finished its campaign with 7-8-14 medal tally, while San Fernando scooped one gold, four silver and 11 bronzes.

Bogo City  and Consolacion both have one gold and two silvers, while Talisay City got a silver and a bronze medal. (FREEMAN)
