Cadiz, Peteros are April's best in CEPCA monthly
CEBU, Philippines - National Master Arnold Cadiz and the young but promising Jave Mareck Peteros topped their respective divisions in the April edition of the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (CEPCA) monthly tournament last Sunday night at the Knight Attack Chess Cafe in Robinsons Galleria Cebu.
Cadiz completed the 9-round Swiss competition with the highest output of 7.5 points to nail the Group A title for top-rated players. Reynaldo Flores placed second with 7.0 points followed by Zilvestein Torres with 6.0 points.
Since Cadiz already qualified for the grand finals after winning the January tilt, Flores and Torres booked the March and April tickets for the year-ending "Battle of Champions." They will by joined by February champ Peterson Sia.
In Group B, Peteros and Manuel Abucay both finished with 4.5 points but Peteros claimed the top honors courtesy of a higher tie-breaker applying the Bucholz system. It was a resounding back-to-back victories for Peteros, who also snared the April crown of the monthly Little Wesley So Cup that is also spearheaded by CEPCA under the dynamic leadership of Engr. Jerry Maratas.
But since Peteros is only a guest player, Abucay earned berth into the December finale in the company of the early Group B qualifiers in Adrian Val Paraiso, Mario Bustillo and Jun Kidlat.
The one-day event was made possible through the support of CEPCA Vice President Engr. Marvyne Guardiana and VMa Power. (FREEMAN)
