Batang Pinoy Cebu qualifying

FROM THE STANDS - Emmanuel B. Villaruel - The Freeman

A bunch of aspiring Cebuano pawnpushers will test each other's mettle in the Cebu chess qualifying for the 2016 Philippine Youth Games-Batang Pinoy National Championships this weekend at Robinsons Galleria Cebu.

Game time starts at 10:30 am. The two-day tilt features only the 13-under age group but there will be separate categories for boys and girls under the standard rapid and blitz format.

FIDE Arbiter Marvin Y. Ruelan said the top two winners in both the boys and girls division will represent Cebu to the Batang Pinoy national finals set on November 27 to December 2 in Tagum City, Davao del Norte.

CEPCA monthly tourney on Sunday

Still as Robinsons Galleria, the October edition of the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (CEPCA) monthly tournament will take place this Sunday.

CEPCA official Jun Olis said aside from the Cepcans, they have also invited top lady and kiddie players to make their event livelier and more exciting.

The top finishers in group A and B will advance into year-ending grand finals also known as the 'Battle of Champions' this December.

Among the early finalists in group A are defending grand champion National Master Rogelio Enriquez, Amado Olea, NM Arnold Cadiz, Peterson Sia, Rosendo Yamyamin, Carlo Maraat and Jojo Muralla.

Those who already punched final tickets in group B are Bong San Pascual, Romy Pialan, Ruel Hortelano,  CEPCA President Jerry Maratas, Percival Fiel, Mario Bustillo, Richard Ouano, Jun Kidlat, and Manuel Abucay.
