CEBU, Philippines – Gaisano Capital dropped what is by far the biggest bombshell in the 20th Sacred Heart Ateneo Alumni Basketball Athletic Association (SHAABAA) Cup after it stunned the previously unbeaten Petron Goldberry, 57-51, last Sunday at the Magis Eagles gym of the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu in Barangay Canduman, Mandaue City.
Arc Gabriel Araw-Araw fired 21 points and Alfonso Doyon nailed a dozen markers for Gaisano Capital, which surprised the defending champions after taking an early 17-10 lead.
Goldberry rallied back in the third period, but Gaisano Capital unleashed a steady offensive in the windup to chalk up its fifth win in eight starts.
Ed Macasling and Justin Huang connived for 31 points but their efforts proved futile as Goldberry saw its eight-game winning streak come to a sudden red stop.
In other Division A games, Lucky Ecarma churned out 20 points as the RDAK Stallions slammed Chick@Phil Basic, 80-57, while Elmer Cabahug charted 23 points to power Bayfront Hotel Cebu to a 59-43 demolition of Filmon Prince Medallion.
Adrison Gaviola had 14 points, while Flacher Galvez added 13 points as the Stallions never looked back after establishing a huge 40-22 lead at halftime on the way to stay at solo second spot with a 7-2 win-loss record. Chick@Phil is still mired down the rear with only one win in nine games.
Antonio Datan was the only other double-digit scorer with 10 as Bayfront Hotel bettered its win-loss record to 4-5, while handing Filmon its seventh loss against a solitary victory.
In Division B, Walter Ong netted 21 markers as the Dynamic Power blasted AutoLab, 80-64, to better its win-loss card to 7-2, while Andrew Choachuy had a breakout performance of 15 points in leading Caltex Delo to a 63-54 whacking of Filmon Finishing Studio.
Stanley Ong and Chris Aldeguer each scored 13, while Benedict Benedicto contributed 12 points for Caltex Delo, which now holds a 5-win, 4-loss slate.
AutoLab slipped to 4-6, while Filmon further slumped at the cellar with only one win in nine games.
On the other hand, the RDAK Transporters remained on top of the heap without breaking a sweat after winning by default over White Gold Club. RDAK now holds a 9-1 card, while White Gold dropped to 2-7. — EBV (FREEMAN)
