USJ-R Spiking Jaguars on a roll in semis
CEBU, Philippines - The University of San Jose-Recoletos Spiking Jaguars took the early lead in three of the four divisions in the semifinal round of the 2014 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Incorporated volleyball tournament at the Aznar Coliseum yesterday.
USJ-R notched back-to-back wins to surge on top of the heap in the tertiary men’s division as well as in the secondary boys and girls category.
In the tertiary level, defending men’s champion USJ-R blasted last year’s runner-up University of Southern Philippines Foundation in straight sets, 25-23, 25-18, 25-18.
It seems that USPF has not yet recovered from its first semifinal loss, paving the way for the Spiking Jaguars to take control of the game from the first up to third and final set.
In the secondary girls action, the Josenians coasted to a smooth 25-23, 25-13 victory over the USPF belles.
Their boys counterparts also made it two in a row at the expense of defending titlist University of San Carlos.
On the other hand, USC and Southwestern University had equal share of defeat and victory.
The Spiking Cobras of SWU pulled off a 25-15, 25-22, 25-13 triumph over USC in the men’s class.
The Carolinians, however, scored a certain measure of revenge when they bested the Southwestern U, the reigning secondary girls champion, in a three-setter, 22-25, 25-18, 25-12.
Exciting volleyball action resumes today at the same venue featuring crucial matches that will determine the contenders in the finals scheduled next week. (FREEMAN)
