Boracay Rum rules Bayugan caging
CEBU, Philippines - PBA D-League contender Boracay Rum of coach Lawrence Chongson cruised past SG Merchandise, 77-70, to win the championship of the 2014 Bayugan City Mayor's Cup Invitational Basketball Tournament last Sunday at the Lope Asis Memorial Gymnasium in Bayugan, Agusan del Sur.
Royder Cabrera topped Boracay Rum with 18 points, while Mon Iligan and Jaypee Belencion banged in 11 markers apiece.
Cebuano hotshot Stephen Padilla netted 18 points for SG Merchandise, which also paraded PBA cagers Eliud Poligrates and Jayford Rodriguez.
"First time ko na sumali sa Panalay league at namangha ako dahil bakbakan talaga ang laban. First time din ng mga bata na maka experience ng physical na laro. Magandang experience to at seguradong malaking tulong ito sa aming pagbabalik sa D-League," said Chongson.
In the battle for third place, Team Joannie mentored by Van Halen Parmis bested reigning CESAFI champions University of the Visayas Green Lancers, 81-74.
Bayugan Mayor Kim Lope A. Asis and his amiable wife Aida were on hand to award the prizes to the winners of the cash-rich event that was also supported Garvey Dy, brand associate of Omega Pain Killer, Jimberns Builders and Construction Supply, Madyaw Construction, and Panalay Tailoring.
Boracay Rum pockected P250,000, while SG Merchandise received P150,000. Team Joannie and the UV Lancers got P100,000 and P75, respectively.
"Talagang nag-enjoy ang taga Bayugan from the elimination to championship game. True to our slogan, it's truly the place where real basketball happens. We're hoping na palakihin pa ang prize because we're expecting a total of eight teams to join next year. Gusto namin na ang Bayugan ay maging sports capital ng Agusan de Sur. Yun ang main goal namin," said Aida B. Asis.— EBV (FREEMAN)
