The Great Titan Lifesaving Championship set May 16

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Over 40 rescue and lifesaving squads are set to compete in a big lifesaving sports event this year dubbed as The Great Titan Lifesaving Championship on May 15 to 18 in Santa Fe, Bantayan Island.

Philippine Life Saving (PLS) considered the event as good means in looking for athletes to compete in the World Championship on September in France.

PLS hopes for a better finish after failing to secure a medal in Australia which is the host of the first World Championship.

PLS secretary general Larry Joie Alag emphasized that one should be a lifesaver first before even thinking of becoming a world-class competitor.

Events like this have been conceptualized by the International Life Saving group as a catalyst to achieve its goals in promoting lifesaving and even in the awareness campaign on drowning.

Santa Fe Mayor Jose Igana, for his part, is supporting this event not only to show to the rest that Santa Fe is back, but they are on the grove via “accountable tourism”.

The event includes the beach flag race, a beach run, run-swim-run, beach sprint, board paddling and the rescue tube rescue race plus the pool events including a 50-meter maniquin carry with and without fins, 200-meter obstacle swim, and a line throw.

Age categories include the junior 10-17, national 18-above and the master's 35-40.

Deadline for the submission of entries will be on April 30. Interested parties can send entries through the [email protected] or at [email protected] or visit their website at www.philippinelifesaving.org. For inquiries one may contact 0905-9198391.D (FREEMAN)
