SWU, STC start hot in Shakey’s volleyball tourney

CEBU, Philippines - Defending champion Southwestern University (SWU) and St.Theresa's College chalked up back-to-back victories to start their respective campaigns in the Visayas leg of the Shakey's Girls Volleyball League Season 11 yesterday at the Aznar Coliseum.

SWU opened its title retention bid with a 25-13, 25-20 thrashing of Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) then followed it up with a 25-11, 25-21 whacking of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF).

SWU, which was still playing against the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) as of this writing last night, will end its elimination round campaign in pool A opposite the University of San Carlos (USC) this morning.

USC kicked off its bid with a 27-25, 25-17 conquest of SHS-AdC, while USJ-R pulled off a hard-earned 25-23,27-25 victory over the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF).

In pool B featuring non-CESAFI member schools, STC got the surprise of everyone after it stunned the multi-titled Pajo National High School (PNHS) in straight sets, 25-21, 25-23.

The Theresians then proceeded with a convincing 25-8, 25-16 triumph against Paref-Springdale to join SWU on top of the leaderboard with clean 2-0 slates.

In the other games, the CVIRAA-bound Mandaue City Comprehensive National High School overshadowed SHS-Hijas de Jesus, 25-10, 25-7, while Pajo bounced back from its loss to STC with a 25-6, 55-8 crushing of SHS-Hijas de Jesus. (FREEMAN)
