Lady Cobras rule SWU scores golden double in CESAFI women’s volleyball

CEBU, Philippines - The Southwestern University (SWU) Lady Cobras slammed the Cebu Doctors' University (CDU) Stallions in straight sets to rule the women's volleyball event of the 13th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc.  (CESAFI) season yesterday at the Aznar Coliseum.

Southwestern U reclaimed supremacy in the collegiate decision with a dominating 25-18, 25-16, 25-21 win over CDU for a clean 2-0 sweep in their  best-of-three championship series. The Lady Cobras prevailed in the opener, 25-16, 27-25, 25-12.

It was a golden double for the Lady Cobras, who earlier clinched the title in the secondary girls division.

The Lady Cobras zoomed to a 4-0 lead in the first set and never looked back on the way to a 25-18 victory capped by service ace by Sheena Quino.

Even though SWU coach Jordan Paca utilized his other wards on the bench in the second and third sets,  CDU still could not keep up with the red-hot Lady Cobras.

In the third set, SWU was so dominant that even their second stringers raced to a sizzling 9-1 start. The Lady Cobras sustained their momentum to nail the final nail on CDU's coffin via a close 25-21 decision.

“Maybe in their mind they have nothing to lose. But being in the finals is already something for them (CDU). Of course, we really prepared for this. Grabe among preparation for the CESAFI and I'm so happy we got our target,” added Paca, who claimed his fourth CESAFI title since handling SWU's volleyball program.

Earlier, the University of San Jose-Recoletos grabbed the bronze after surviving a third set scare against the University of Southern Philippines Foundation, 25-22,  25-19, 19-25, 25-21.

In the secondary boys action, the University of San Carlos dethroned USJ-R after winning Game 2 in straight sets, 25-22, 25-15. USPF placed third after whipping Don Bosco Technology Center, 25-17, 25-14. (FREEMAN)
