CEBU, Philippines - The University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) waylaid defending champion University of San Carlos (USC) in straight sets to earn a share of the lead in the men's volleyball event of the 13th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) season the other night at the USPF gym.
The Spiking Panthers crushed the Carolinians 25-23, 25-18, 25-17 for their sixth win in a row and a share of the overall lead with the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R).
USC fell to 4-3 in a tie with the University of the Visayas (UV), which nailed its fourth victory by default against the Cebu Doctors' University (CDU) Stallions.
CDU did not show up against UV because its players have exams accordingly. No sanctions will be given to CDU though since they informed the tournament committee about their predicament ahead of time.
However, it is not yet clear yet whether CDU will be able to play its final match against Southwestern University (SWU) tomorrow. SWU currently stands with an even 3-3 win-loss card and badly needs a win to keep its semifinal hopes alive.
USPF and USJ-R, on the other hand, are already assured of semis berths with immaculate 6-0 slates. (FREEMAN)
