CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu Doctors' (CDU) University belles stunned the multi-titled University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) in four sets in women's volleyball of the 13th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) season played at the University of San Carlos (USC)-Main gym.
Learning some valuable lessons from its first game loss to Southwestern University, CDU started out aggressively to post a 25-18 win on the first set, but USJ-R, last year's third placer, swiftly bounced back in the second set via a 25-20 decision for the 1-1 equalizer.
USJ-R, however, ran out of gas early and failed to keep up with the CDU belles, powered by some Catmon players who were formerly Palarong Pambansa champions, in the last two sets.
After taking the third set, 25-20, CDU wasted no time in going for the kill in the fourth set in convincing fashion, 25-15.
As CDU stands with a 1-1 slate, USJ-R stayed winless going into this weekend's battle.
In the men's division, the CDU spikers were not as lucky as their female counterparts, bowing to the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) in four sets.
After a sizzling 25-9 start, CIT-U faltered in the second frame, 23-25, but wiped out CDU in the third and four sets, 25-12, 25-16 to finally barge into the win column.
While CIT-U snapped out of its two-game jinx, CDU slumped to its second straight setback.
In the secondary division, the SWU girls opened their campaign with a 25-22, 25-18 beating of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation, but their boys squad fumbled at the hands of USC, 14-25, 20-25. (FREEMAN)
