CEBU, Philippines - Dannel Jay Tormis’ star shone out brightly as he scored a triple victory spotlighted by the premiere men's open title in the highly-successful 22nd Erne Jawad Memorial Table Tennis Cup over the weekend at the Cebu City Sports Center.

After missing the coveted crown last year, Tormis did not  disappoint his long-time followers and supporters this time as he bested his teammate Val Stephen Jaca in the men's open final, 3-1.

It was actually a golden treble for the University of Cebu (UC) varsity as he also topped the boys 18 category and spearheaded UC's victorious campaign in the men's team competition where they outgunned the Jason Rodriguez-led Hua Ching and the Mark Jimenez-skippered  Lopue Table Tennis Association (LOPTTA) of Bacolod City.

Danel Jay, however, couldn't celebrate fully as her Elona Dane Tormis was dethroned in the women's division by Emy Rose Dael of LOPTTA.

Danel also pulled off a resounding twinkill as she snared the girls 18 tiara after edging out UC’s Athena Comaingking.

Eljey, another Tormis on the rise, dominated the boys 13 category after outlasting DJ Cabrillo as John Carl Aquino came out third.

In the girls 13, the Bacoleño table paddlers from LOPTTA came up with a clean sweep courtesy of Angela Borbon, Allysa Toleco and Edria Gargania.

Cebuano Richard Gonzales, one of the best table tennis players the country has ever produced, did not take part in the men's open batte. Instead, he strut his wares in the liha event where he easily won over Glenn Jacalan and Tata Carreon, who settled for second and third, respectively.

In the girls 13 team event, LOPTTA clinched the championship after beating the University of San Jose-Recoletos, while the University of San Carlos led by Dominic Lucero outsmarted UC-A to take the third place honors.

The members of Cebu Table Tennis Club also made their presence felt after winning the liha team competition. They defeated Neilben Carreon’s squad as the Glenn Jacalan Liha Paddlers wound up third.
