USC goes 2-0 in SBP tourney

PR - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Defending SBP champion University of San Carlos (USC) scored a second straight win, defeating Cebu Eastern College (CEC), 63-30, at the resumption of the BEST SBP Passerelle Twin Tournament sponsored by Milo at the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Mango Avenue Campus Gym.

In other SBP games, the University of the Visayas (UV) stopped University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R), 41-22, while Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) stunned SHS-AdC, 24-22.

USC used a third quarter surge and a suffocating defense in the fourth period to put the game away. After sporting a slim 25-21 edge at halftime, USC stretched the lead to 39-29 after three quarters, then applied the clamps in the fourth period where they limited CEC to only one point for the convincing win.

On the other hand, DBTC came from behind to stun SHS-AdC in a low-scoring ballgame. DBTC fell behind 20-16 going into the fourth period, but limited the SHS-AdC offense to a mere basket in the fourth period to score the morale-boosting win.

UV bounced back from its overtime loss to CEC by blanking USJ-R in the second period to take a commanding 21-6 lead at halftime after falling behind 6-5 after one quarter. It was smooth sailing from then on.

In the opening games of the Passerelle division, SHS-AdC cruised to an 86-18 win over Southwestern University, while CEC crushed DBTC, 67-36.

Games of the Milo-backed tournament and co-sponsored RCBC Savings bank resume this week at the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Mango Avenue campus gym. (FREEMAN)
