CEBU, Philippines - The Queen City United (QCU) shackled Hiroshi FC, 3-0, to clinch back-to-back championships in the premiere men's open division of the 15th Aboitiz Cup football tournament, which formally came to a close yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center.A strong long shot made by Ariel Cahilig from the left flank in the early goings of the first half shocked Hiroshi, which was further left disorganized after Harold Buot, one of its top gunners, was slapped with a red card.
Making the most from its psychological advantage, CQU continued to take command of the game paving the way for Junard Aguilar to come up with a successful attempt in the second half.
Although two key players of QCU were not able to play due to injury, the rest stepped up its game, putting up a strong defensive front to quell any comeback attempt by Hiroshi.
A penalty shot by Nigerian Xamxon Olinayi sealed CQU’s victory and back-to-back titles for coach Mario Ceniza as the team’s head coach.
Hiroshi, however, still has something to celebrate for as it defended its 38-above title after edging out ERCO FC, 2-0.
Hiroshi's foreign players delivered the goods, with Panny Kyriakopiulos finding the back of the net at 26th and Yamaguchi Noriyuri knocking in a goal at the 45th.
On the other hand, the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) whipped the University of San Carlos (USC), 2-0, to wrest the Under-23 crown.
Jasper Gerarman logged the first goal for USPF at the 36th. Albert Tejad followed suit at the 72nd to finally break the backs of USC. (FREEMAN)
