Sunsport basketball camp to offer exciting treat for youngters

CEBU, Philippines - Young Cebuano hoopsters who want to sharpen further their hardcourt skills are in for another exciting summer treat as the Sunsport Basketball Training Camp, which takes pride for being Cebu’s longest and best-run cage clinic, will hold its 20th season starting on April 1 at the Sacred Heart Center Sports Club along D. Jakosalem Street, this city.

This year, those who will enroll in the first level will proceed outright to the second level (advanced program) in May. The camp will culminate with an indoor tournament to test the participants on how far have they gone through with their two-month training.

"We had started this test application last year and we hope that we could make it more exciting and fun this season," said camp director Giovannie “JoJo” Romarate, who will discuss more about the clinic during the April 1 registration date.

Romarate said the first phase of training is intended for the beginners. It will run until April 27, with training sessions from 8 to 10 am for Batch 1 and from 10 am to 12nn for Batch 2.

"At this stage, we will be teaching our students the fundamentals of the sport such as proper shooting, dribbling, passing, footwork and other related drills," said Romarate, presently the chief bench tactician of the Salazar Colleges of Science and Institute of Technology (SCSIT) Skyblazers.

Romarate added that the second part of the camp, which will be held from May 6 to 31, is for the advanced level.

"It is at this point that we shift our mode of instruction to a higher level. We will now be imparting to the campers some offensive and defensive strategies, on-court communication and other technical aspect of the game," said Romarate.

"Above all these drills, we want to instill in them the value of hardwork, discipline and teamwork as well as the spirit of sportsmanship, which is the very essence of a well-rounded athlete," he added.

Registration fee is pegged at P1,100 inclusive of an upper uniform, Sunsport basketball 2013 edition, bag and white t-shirt.

"Aside from the sporting goods that we are giving away, we assure all participants that they will get their money's worth in terms of the quality of training will are going to render them," assured Romarate.
