Sinulog chess festival at Colonnade this weekend

CEBU, Philippines - Up and coming Cebuano pawnpushers will once again test each other's mastery in the famous European boardgame via the Colonnade Mall Sinulog Chess Festival this weekend.

Organized by the Cebu Chess Association in partnership with Rose Pharmacy, Inc, close to P35,000 will be given away to the top performers of the  two-day tilt that features the open, ladies and kiddies (14-under) categories as well as the infinitum chess and the Cebu City District 1 school-based competition in coordination with the Cebu City Sports Commission and the Department of Education.

Infinitum is a variation of chess game conceptualized by award-winning Cebuano sportsman and chess patron Boojie Lim.

The champion in the open division will pocket P7,000, while the second to fifth will receive P5,000, P3,000, P2,000 and P1,000, respectively.The sixth to 10th will get a consolation prize of P500 each.

The top placers in the ladies bracket till take home P700, P500, P300, and P200. The champion in infinitum chess will get P2,500, with the second to fourth getting P1,300, P800, and P600. The top three kiddies players will grab P1,000, P700 and P500, while the winners in the District 1 contest will receive trophies, medals and chess literatures.

Entry fee is pegged at P100 for ladies and kiddies and P200 for adults. The organizers will be accepting on-site registration. For further details, one may contact international arbiter Marvin Ruelan at 0926-7352951. (FREEMAN)
