CEBU, Philippines — A 60-year-old man was taken into police custody after allegedly firing a .45 cal. pistol at his son during a heated argument in Purok 7, Barangay Daanlungsod, Toledo City, Cebu, last Thursday afternoon, September 10.

The suspect, identified by police as alias “Sunny”, 60, married and a resident of the area, allegedly shot at his 30-year-old son, alias “Mark,” during an altercation.

Mark went to the Toledo City Police Station at around 4 P.M. to report the incident.

Based on his account, he and his father were arguing when the confrontation escalated. Sunny allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired at him.

The shot missed Mark, who immediately sought cover behind a concrete wall. He then managed to get away from the area and ran to the police station to ask for assistance.

Police personnel led by Police Senior Master Sergeant Mark Anthony Salvacion responded to the reported shooting and reached the area at around 4:30 P.M.

Officers found a spent .45 cal. cartridge on the ground and saw Sunny outside his residence.

Rather than force an arrest, police negotiators talked the suspect into surrendering peacefully.

Sunny subsequently handed over a .45 cal. pistol with one live round in the chamber, an empty magazine and a black inside-the-waistband holster.

When police asked him to show his License to Own and Possess Firearms, he was unable to present valid documentation authorizing his possession of the firearm.

Police arrested Sunny, informed him of his constitutional rights and brought him to the Toledo City Police Station for booking and custodial investigation.

Police are now preparing to file charges of attempted parricide under the Revised Penal Code and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition under Republic Act No. 10591 before the prosecutor’s office against the suspect. — (FREEMAN)
