Student group welcomes stronger opposition
CEBU, Philippines — The Student Council Alliance of the Philippines (SCAP) welcomed the emergence of a stronger and more united democratic opposition following the recent mid-term elections.
In the wake of Vice President Sara Duterte’s successful impeachment by the House of Representatives, SCAP expressed its full support for the inclusion of incoming Akbayan Partylist Representative Atty. Chel Diokno and incoming Mamamayang Liberal (ML) Partylist Representative Atty. Leila de Lima, in the official House impeachment prosecution panel.
“The two are recognized as stalwart defenders of human rights and democracy --respected legal minds whose experience, credibility, and moral clarity will strengthen this historic pursuit of justice,” SCAP said in a statement.
Akbayan Partylist, through Representative Perci Cendaña, served as the principal endorser of the initial impeachment complaint.
SCAP said with Diokno and De Lima joining the prosecution panel, students and young people nationwide are assured that the process is anchored on integrity, principle, and legal expertise.
“Their leadership offers hope that the pursuit of justice will not be derailed by political pressure or impunity,” it said.
It added that this impeachment trial is more than a constitutional procedure --it is a test of political will and democratic resolve.
“Sara Duterte’s misuse of confidential funds, abandonment of the education sector during her tenure as Education secretary, and repeated disregard for public accountability are not mere administrative lapses --they are grave betrayals of public trust.”
SCAP added that all eyes are now on the Philippine Senate and the youth of this nation demand a trial that is independent, impartial, and faithful to the rule of law.
It further said that SCAP and the Filipino youth and students will remain vigilant throughout the trial as the fight against abuse of power and the misuse of public funds continues, and the youth will not allow a future defined by unaccountable leadership and systemic corruption. (CEBU NEWS)
