Capitol signs agreement with Ginatilan, Malabuyoc

CEBU, Philippines — To ensure the sustainable and regulated management of the newest tourism attractions in southern Cebu, the Cebu Provincial Government has entered into a formal agreement with the municipal governments of Ginatilan and Malabuyoc.

Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, representing Cebu Province, signed a memorandum of agreement Saturday, November 30, with Ginatilan Mayor Roy Vincent Singco and Malabuyoc Mayor Erlinda Piedad to oversee the operations of the newly reopened Ginatilan-Malabuyoc River Adventure (GIMARA), which highlights the Looc River and Kabutongan Falls.

On the same day as the signing, the Ginatilan-Malabuyoc River Adventure (GIMARA), showcasing the river and falls, was officially opened to the public.

According to Sugbo News, Capitol’s official media arm, the agreement seeks to preserve each natural attraction while promoting responsible tourism and creating livelihood opportunities for the locals.

It also stated that strict guidelines will be enforced for operating the river adventure activities, including trekking and other recreational activities.

Furthermore, it mandates that all tour guides, operators, and related businesses obtain accreditation from both the Province of Cebu and the Department of Tourism (DOT).

Regarding revenue, it will be shared among stakeholders, with Ginatilan and Malabuyoc towns each receiving an equal 50-50 split.

Additionally, the Cebu Provincial Government will introduce an online booking system to streamline operations and enhance accessibility for both local and foreign tourists.

Guests wishing to visit GIMARA can book their adventure packages at the municipal halls of either Ginatilan or Malabuyoc.

In its reopening, officials assured that over a hundred tour guides have been properly trained and certified by the DOT, and are also registered under the Sugbo Segurado insurance system of the Capitol.

For just P1,250, visitors can experience GIMARA, which offers a unique adventure featuring trekking, river jumping, and exploring the Looc River and the Kabutongan Falls cave system, located within the shared jurisdictions of the two southern Cebu municipalities.

The reopening of GIMARA is expected to boost local revenue and increase the visibility of both towns as top adventure destinations in southern Cebu, an area also home to the nearby Kawasan Falls in Badian and the canyoneering trail in Alegria.— (FREEMAN)
