“Viral homilist” gets flak

CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu Lady Lawyers Association (CELLA) has condemned the statements of a Catholic priest suggesting that victims of domestic violence should suffer in silence; tolerate illegal drug use; and encouraging a positive outlook on infidelity.

 In a statement, CELLA said the remarks made by Rev. Father Crecenciano “Ciano” Ubod during his homily last Sunday are not only alarming but “deeply harmful”.

“These remarks are not only alarming but also deeply harmful, as they directly contradict the principles of justice, equality, and the protection of human rights. As an organization dedicated to the defense of these values, we find it unacceptable that such dangerous rhetoric is being propagated by a member of the clergy.”

According to the lady lawyers, the statements are in direct violation of the laws of the Republic of the Philippines particularly R.A. 11313 or the “Bawal Bastos Law,” which seeks to protect individuals from gender-based harassment, and R.A. 9262 otherwise known as the “Violence Against Women and Children Act,” which criminalizes acts of violence and abuse against women and children.

 “By suggesting that abuse, drug use, and infidelity are to be tolerated, Father Ubod not only endangers the physical and emotional well-being of individuals but also undermines the very foundation of our society, including the sanctity of marriage and family life,” the organization said.

 It added that the examples given by Ubod which are contrary to law, morals, and public policy derail and render as useless the efforts of law organizations such as CELLA, NGOs, and civil society in educating the public about protecting the rights of women, children and the marginalized.

 It added that while they endeavor to combat ignorance and wrong practices, a member of the clergy encourages wrongdoing and even lambasts women who stand for their rights by calling them names such as "pagkabuang aning mga bayhana".

CELLA urged the Church authorities to look into the troubling homilies made by Ubod and take appropriate actions. The lady lawyers’ group said that it is crucial that religious leaders promote messages that uplift and protect their congregations rather than contribute to the perpetuation of violence, addiction, and moral decay.

“CELLA stands firm in its commitment to ensuring that all individuals, particularly women and children, are safeguarded from harm and that the rule of law is upheld in every aspect of society,” the organization added.

Ubod, the parish priest of San Vicente Ferrer Parish of San Vicente, Liloan often referred to as the “Viral Homilist" of Cebu, is known for his engaging and humorous homilies.  He is also the head of the Cebu Archdiocesan Prison Apostolate (CAPA), an organization that focuses on ministering to incarcerated individuals. It provides spiritual guidance and promotes rehabilitation through faith.

The Freeman tried but failed to get Ubod’s reaction as of press time.

The Archdiocese of Cebu through its spokesperson Msgr. Joseph Tan also refused to issue a statement saying he is not privy to the issue yet.   FPL  (CEBU NEWS)
