8 Cebuano artists to be recognized in Sugboanong Bahandi Awards

CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu City government will be honoring Cebuano artists from different fields through the Sugboanong Bahandi Awards on August 27, 2024.

This came following the approval of the City Council on the proposal to honor eight artists from different fields this year.

The artists to be given awards, according to the City’s PIO, is based on the recommendations from the Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission (CHAO).

Two showbiz icons lead the cast of awardees—Asia’s timeless diva, Maria Teresa Magdalena Abellare Llamedo- Crusata popularly known as “Dulce”, and beauty queen-turned acclaimed actress Pilar Pilapil.

Dulce will be awarded for the impact she made in the country’s music industry, while Pilapil will be awarded for her outstanding performances in the film industry.

Well-known pianist Ingrid Sala Santa Maria will also be given an award in the field of music.

Philippine Sports Commissioner (PSC) Edward Hayco also made it to the final list for his valuable contributions in the field of dance.

Hayco is a multi-titled dancesporter himself, but later on focused on the dancesports’ grassroots program in the city.

Fashion designer Philip Rodriguez will also be honored under the field of fashion, while painter Celso Pepito will also be formally recognized under Visual Arts, and Dr. Orlando Magno in the field of theatre.

The Sugboanon Bahandi Awards is given by the Cebu City government in recognition to Cebuano artists in various fields including in visual arts, performing arts, media arts, music, dance, threatre arts among others.

It is to recognize Cebuanos who have made a lasting impact and have given a huge honor to the city of Cebu.

Previous recipients in the said award include Resil Mojares, Nicolas Pacaña, Jose "Kimsoy" Yap, Romulo Galicano, Kenneth Cobonpue, and the late Msgr. Rody Villanueva.

The upcoming awarding ceremony will also serve as one of the highlights of the Cebu City Arts Month. - /ATO (FREEMAN)
