CEBU, Philippines — Despite the ongoing demolition of Sanciangko Bridge that connects Barangays Pahina Central and San Nicolas Proper, the Cebu City Transportation Office reported a moderate traffic in the area.
CCTO assistant head lawyer Kent Francesco Jongoy told The Freeman that the moderate traffic condition is attributed to the less volume of public transportation passing through the bridge and its vicinity.
“Moderate ra ang traffic diri kay only about five TPUJ (traditional public utility jeepney) routes ra ang moagi diha,” Jongoy said.
Jongoy added that the area is also more of an alternative route than a primary route going to Cebu City South since the whole stretch of Sanciangko is a one-way street. The opening of the Panganiban exit at CCMC has also helped in the diversion of motor vehicles to N. Bacalso avenue.
The other end of Panganiban-- Colon and C. Padilla streets—have also sufficiently received the diverted south-bound vehicles.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) started clearing the bridge last Tuesday which resulted in the closure of some roads in the vicinity.
Among the roads that are temporarily closed to vehicle traffic are the intersections of Sanciangko-Panganiban St. to Tres De Abril-Sanciangko St. going to Taboan Public Market. The said roads will remain closed until the demolition and the construction of a new bridge is completed next year.
All motorists passing through the area are advised to take alternative routes.
DPWH had allocated more than P13 million for the construction of a new bridge construction in the area. The existing 71-year-old bridge has to be demolished after it was found to be structurally unsound. – /FPL (FREEMAN)
