CEBU, Philippines — Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia is pushing for a stricter implementation of the truck ban along UN Avenue and DM Cortes Street in Mandaue City to ease traffic congestion in those areas.

The governor observed that trailer trucks traversing the area contribute to daytime traffic congestion, as they no longer adhere to the truck ban.

As quoted by Sugbo News, the governor said these big trucks are supposedly only allowed to pass by the said areas from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

She disclosed her observations in a Capitol meeting attended by key officials of the Mandaue City Government, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), the Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue (TEAM), and owners lots near the two roads last Friday.

This led to an understanding that trailer trucks from Mandaue City will have to be restricted from passing the roundabout that was installed at the foot of the Marcelo Fernan Bridge.

The trucks would be redirected to an alternative route alongthe  Butuanon River towards Cansaga Bridge in neighboring Consolacion town.

It was also noted that landowners in the area have generously agreed to donate their properties, each at least 200 square meters, to facilitate the expansion of the roundabout.

Telecommunications and utility companies have also committed to relocate their posts and structures within the affected zone. — (FREEMAN)
