MCWD to get water from Carmen deep wells

CEBU, Philippines — The Metropolitan Cebu Water District is expected to get an additional 6,000 to 7,000 cubic meters of water from the two deep wells in Carmen, Cebu, once Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia lifts the cease and desist order that she issued a few years ago to stop its production.

“We will have additional water, hopefully around six or seven thousand cubic meters. We’re working on it, gipangita g’yud na ni Governor Gwen nga adunay additional water,” MCWD chairman of the board, Atty. Jose Daluz III, told Sugbo News, the official Facebook page of the provincial government.

The governor, in a meeting with Daluz, MCWD general manager Edgar Donoso, and Manila Water Philippine Ventures (MWPV) led by general manager Stan Genosa, is looking to lift the order to address the water shortage in Metro Cebu due to the El Niño phenomenon.

“We can start production from aning duha ka close nga pumps. Gi-cease and desist man na nako di ba? So we will justify it to lift the cease and desist in view of general welfare,” said the governor.

Once the governor’s cease and desist order will be lifted, MWPV will start extracting water from these two deep wells.

With the current production of 35 million liters daily from the town’s Luyang River, MCWD can expect an accumulated infusion of at least 50 million liters daily into its water supply from Carmen town.

MCWD’s service area includes the cities of Cebu, Lapu-Lapu, Mandaue, and Talisay as well as the Municipalities of Cordova, Consolacion, Liloan, and Compostela.

Daluz welcomed the governor’s move especially since MCWD has recorded a drastic decrease of its water supply since most of their sources are facing water crisis due to El Niño.

Among these is the Compostela water facility which previously delivers 10,000 liters of water per day, but has been unable to produce water now.

Despite issues hounding MCWD, the Capitol said they will commit to aid MCWD as the Cebu provincial government recognizes constituents of the province who are most affected by this water crisis. — (FREEMAN)
