Mandaue roundabout to be tested

Le Phyllis F. Antojado-Orillaneda - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — A simulation of the proposed roundabout system at the intersection of Plaridel Street and UN Avenue in Mandaue city is set for April 14.

The collaborative effort between the Cebu provincial government, Mandaue City, and the private sector aims to address the traffic congestion in the area, especially as this area is considered the busiest road in Mandaue.

UN Avenue intersection is the gateway of those coming to and from Mactan Island through Marcelo Fernan Bridge.

Engr. Wally Liu, CEO of Primary Structures, presented the roundabout system during a meeting with officials of the Capitol headed by Governor Gwendolyn Garcia.

Present during the meeting were the concerned structure owners and other lot owners in the areas that are affected by heavy congestion of traffic especially during peak hours.

The said roundabout, just like the Fuente Osmeña rotunda in Cebu City, is seen to be effective in managing traffic in an area, especially in cities like Mandaue. The said system is also implemented in Ormoc which, according to Garcia, is an effective way of managing the traffic flow at the major intersections in the city.

In implementing the roundabout system, the Department of Public Works and Highways will clear the area for the installation of the roundabout infrastructure such as signs and traffic barriers. Mandaue traffic enforcers will also undergo a reorientation program to help them familiarize how the roundabout system operates.

According to the Capitol through its news portal Sugbo News, those affected households will be relocated by the government.

Garcia also urged stakeholders like the traffic enforcers in Mandaue and even the motorists to cooperate for the successful implementation of the said system to solve the traffic problem in the area.
