6T bikers in a day in Cebu City counted for Mobility Awards
CEBU, Philippines — Over 6,000 bikers in a day were recorded during the Bisikleta Count in Cebu City this year, which has avoided tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emission and also save costs on fuel.
This data was recently released by the Mobility Awards, which Cebu City is participating in. The Mobility Awards calls for the urgent improvement of transport infrastructure in Philippine cities, making it safer and more inclusive to the mobility needs of cyclists, pedestrians, and commuters.
In the figures recently released by the Mobility Awards, 6,788 people on bicycle were counted last June 29, 2023 in four different locations
in Cebu City. The counting was done by volunteers.
Of the total figure, 59.63 percent are helmet users while the rest where non-helmet users.
Aside from that, 99.31 percent of them are male cyclists, and 0.68 percent female.
Most of these cyclists were noted in the morning and Colon Street had the highest count of cyclists passing through.
On a peak hour period, 183 bicycles per kilometer was noted.
Out of the total bikers counted in a day, an estimated 1.69 tons of CO2 emission was avoided per kilometer traveled.
Aside from that, P9,563.08 in motorcycle fuel cost savings was noted per kilometer traveled and P28,254.55 for car fuel cost savings per kilometer traveled.
Further, Mandaue City, which is also participating in the Mobility Awards, had 6,084 total cyclists counted last July 13 in four different locations.
Around 97.19 percent of them are males, 2.25 percent females and 0.56 percent with undetermined gender.
Like Cebu City, more cyclists were recorded in the morning than in the afternoon, most along A.C Cortes street.
For every kilometer traveled, the total number of cyclists in Mandaue avoided 1.51 estimated tons of CO2 emission, and also had P8,571.27 of motorcycle fuel cost savings plus P25,324.20 in car fuel cost savings.
