City needs help for repair of Carbon Market’s Unit 1
CEBU, Philippines — Hoping to replicate what he did for Pardo Public Market, Cebu City Market Administrator Robert Barquilla yesterday sought again the assistance of the private sector for the immediate renovation of Unit 1 of Carbon Public Market.
Unit 1 is currently designated as a wet market, where meat, fish, and chicken are being sold.
Complaints have reached Barquilla's office that the tiles of Unit 1's floor are becoming too slippery and damaged so that the risk of them causing injuries is high.
Barquilla said that although Unit 1 is part of the Carbon Market Redevelopment Project the City Government entered into with Megawide/Cebu2World, the City Government could not just ignore the people's concerns by not immediately addressing them.
Barquilla said he already discussed the matter with Mayor Michael Rama, who also promised to immediately act on it.
Barquilla said the is particularly looking at his fellow Rotarians for help.
In the meantime, his office already started taking out Unit 1's old tiles and intends to replace them with new ones or just apply an industrial finish or using rubberized paint.
“Ako lang una gipa-remove una ang existing tiles kay slide na kayo," Barquilla said.
For Pardo Public Market, Barquilla was able establish a public-private partnership for its rehabilitation after it suffered heavy damage in Dec. 16, 2021 due to super typhoon Odette.
Repair works began yesterday and are expected to be done by next month. — /RHM (FREEMAN)
