46 WWII veterans receive US congressional medals

CEBU, Philippines — Close to 50 war veterans were honored with the US Congressional Gold medals from the US Congress at the Cebu City Hall’s Community Hall yesterday.

Leading the cast of awardees is Staff Sergeant Sotero Librero, 102, who was still standing proud and strong as he received the gold medal.

Librero, accordingly, rendered services from Sept. 22, 1942 to February 1946 and became the oldest living awardee yesterday.

The US Congressional Gold medal, the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office said, is a prestigious honor given to Filipino veterans of World War II.

This is in recognition of their exceptional contributions, accomplishments and sacrifices in the said war.

“It represents the most esteemed civilian accolade granted by the US Congress to an individual or collective that has demonstrated remarkable deeds or acts of service benefitting the security, prosperity, and national well-being of the United States,” part of the description given by the PVAO said.

Indeed, it is “not an ordinary recognition…equal footing to the medal of Freedom,” Cebu City Administrator, Atty. Collin Rosell, said during the ceremonies on behalf of Mayor Michael Rama.

“This is something very serious. Let this be put in record..this is a moment to cherish, a moment to celebrate, a moment of bravery and encouragement for nationalism, patriotism for all of us,” added Rosell.

Aside from Rosell, also in attendance to award 46 civilian war veterans were US Department of Veterans Affairs acting director Kevin MacAllister and officials from the Department of National Defense, among others. — (FREEMAN)
