‘Brave rider’ honored for chasing snatcher

Romeo D. Marantal - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu City Police Office has honored a motorcycle rider connected to a ridesharing company for his bravery in chasing a snatcher along Colon Street on May 24, 2023.

The incident happened along Leon Kilat road and was met by Marlon, whose real name was withheld, for his security.

Someone shouted “snatcher gukoron” and without hesitation, Marlon chased him and he caught up with him on Colon Street.

He stopped the snatcher and put on the ground and the snatcher was caught and the wallet and cellphone were recovered.

Marlon admitted that he was scared of what he did but the training he went through when he was a barangay tanod in helped a lot.

Marlon also said that that was the second time he had helped someone who was a victim of a snatcher.

"Og makakita og ingon ana, makasugat og pareho sa akoa kung mahimo makatabang mo tabang, pero og dili gyud makaya ayaw lang kay lisod sad," said Marlon.

Accordingly, CCPO director, Police Colonel Ireneo Dalogdog, described Marlon's bravery as extraordinary so they congratulated him by giving a plaque and cash.

Dologdog said that they need everyone's help because the police force in Cebu City is limited.

"Kami mapasalamaton tungod kay adunay mga tao nga andam ipakita ang ilahang katakos, ang ilahang kaisog para lang makatabang para sa kasulbaran pud sa may naay crime incidents makatabang sa atoang peace and order situation sa Siyudad sa Sugbo," said Dalogdog.

There is a memorandum of agreement between the CCPO and the motorcycle taxi company so that their riders can help the police by making them aware of the traffic rules, giving information to the police by calling the hotline numbers so that they can respond immediately. — (FREEMAN)
