Dogs that escaped from shelter pose danger to animals, people

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Around 10 to 15 dogs from the abandoned shelter in Barangay Adlaon, Cebu City that managed to escape and are still “at large” pose danger to residents and even farm animals around the area, said a government official.

Earlier, it was reported that there are around 127 dogs inside the dog shelter with some of them managing to escape after the owner and its caretaker abandoned them.

During the first day of rescue, City Disaster Chief Harold Alcontin said the dogs were in a state of survival of the fittest with “dog-eats-dog” situation already.

The city government has already rescued most of the dogs, but there were some that managed to escape.

Barangay Adlaon responders, headed by Councilman Lee Gabud, managed to rescue two of the dogs that earlier escaped.

Barangay responders continue to roam around the barangay to locate the other dogs that escaped to keep everyone safe.

These dogs that managed to escape are said to be very dangerous since they had been abandoned without food and water.

Yet, even before the shelter had been abandoned, one of Mayor Mike Rama’s special assistants, Ramil Ayuman, learned and relayed to The FREEMAN that there were already some dogs that had bitten and killed sheep and other animals in a nearby farm lot.

It was not determined how many sheep and other animals died, but it was learned that the damage already reached around P500,000.

With this, Ayuman and all the other concerned local and barangay officials are calling all residents in the area and even from neighboring barangays to be extra vigilant and careful and report any stray dog found, so it can no longer harm an animal or, worse, people.

“There is a cause of concern, hangtod di madakpan ang 10 to 15 ka iro nga nakapuga diha sa abandonadong dog shelter house sa Barangay Adlaon. Ang mga iro delikado makapaak sa mga lumulopyo sa Barangay Adlaon,” Ayuman said. — (FREEMAN)
