UP-Cebu clarifies shift to online classes

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  The University of the Philippines-Cebu had momentarily shifted to online classes for thorough disinfection of all classrooms after a student was found to be positive for COVID-19 based on an antigen test.

UP-Cebu issued a clarification after a supposed internal memorandum regarding the temporary shift to online classes in the said campus from May 4 to May 11, 2023 landed on social media and even in several news outlets.

While the said memo clearly said “probable” Covid-19, some news reports had already declared it as a confirmed case.

UP-Cebu clarified that from April 24 to May 4, a total of 32 students with cold/flu symptoms consulted with their campus clinic, both online and onsite. The campus has a total student population of 1,739.

“Out of this number, two students reported positive results under the rapid antigen test, with one consultation conducted onsite and the other online.”

With this, UP Cebu decided to temporarily shift to online classes for a week to allow for thorough disinfection of all classrooms before resuming onsite classes for the health and safety of the students.

“This move is part of the standard protocols under the new normal.”

UP-Cebu also emphasized that Cebu City remains under Alert Level 1, “indicating that the situation is generally under control.”

Based on the Department of Health’s COVID-19 tracker, there are only 10 active cases in Cebu City.

UP-Cebu, though, continues to remind everyone in their community to “remain vigilant, follow health protocols, and stay informed through UP Cebu official channels.” —   GMR (FREEMAN)
