Entrepreneurship subject in K-12 program pushed

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  Cebu City South District Representative Eduardo “Edu” Rama is seeking the inclusion of entrepreneurship as a subject in junior and senior high school curriculum.

Under House Bill 6880, Rama seeks to hone the ability of Filipino youth to take calculated risks, organize, and manage a business in a competitive market that is constantly evolving.

For Rama, education is a tool for empowerment.

This is the major reason why he proposed the inclusion of entrepreneurship as a separate subject in the junior and senior high school curricula of the K-12 program.

"Entrepreneurship is a key driver of a country's economy. The world is changing rapidly and we are moving steadily towards a generation equipped with more technical knowledge,” Rama said.

The neophyte lawmaker added that students will be exposed to concepts and exercises which will challenge them to develop their entrepreneurial skills.

The bill also seeks to provide a complete, adequate, and integrated system of education to both private and public school students making such a system of education relevant and attuned to the current needs of Filipinos.

“Entrepreneurship is a significant career option among the current generation as it significantly contributes to economic growth and generates numerous jobs," read the bill’s explanatory note.

The Department of Education Secretary, on the other hand, will appoint a head subject Specialist who will lead the implementation of the proposed separate subject.

Proposed entrepreneurial subject matters include (1) leadership and management, (2) fund sourcing, (3) marketing, (4) business strategy, and (5) contemporary entrepreneurial practices. — GMR (FREEMAN)
