Dads play vital role in child development – NNC
NNC’s eHISGOT father's day special event stressed the role fathers play in the first 1000 days of their children’s lives.

CEBU, Philippines — The National Nutrition Council (NNC) in Central Visayas has recognized the important role of fathers in their children’s early nutrition and development.

NNC’s eHISGOT father's day special event stressed the role fathers play in the first 1000 days of their children’s lives.

NNC program coordinator Parolita Mission said the event is among the council’s weekly educational programs under the new normal.

“This is part of the new normal's line of programs called the Online Health and Nutrition Promotion Project aimed at increasing netizens’ awareness on the topics relating to nutrition and wellness,” she said.

With the theme "FIRST 1000 DAYS ni baby, katungdanan usab Ni DADDY!", Mission said the program targets to help fathers in preventing life-threatening childhood illnesses and in providing nutritional needs, among others.

Citing a study, Ariel Odtojan, Asia Pacific regional advocacy manager for World Vision International, said

the First 1000 Days (F1KD) cover the days of pregnancy, breastfeeding, introduction to solid food, and transition to family diets.

“F1KD is considered as the ‘Golden Window of Opportunity’. It is a crucial part in the growth and development of a child. And, a child should be given optimal nutrition,” he said.

The lack of nutrition and care, he said, will result in malnutrition.

Mission earlier said malnutrition can cause higher susceptibility to diseases and infections, including COVID-19.

As a father himself, Odtojan said bonding or spending time with kids and encouraging partners to have positive health behaviors are also essential for the F1KD.

Julian Isiah Bullecer, a stay-at-home father, echoed the important role of fathers in F1KD. He is also an advocate of breastfeeding, which provides good nutrition for babies. — Jean Aldemer Seroje Salgados, Silliman University Comm intern, KQD (FREEMAN)
