Jail officers in Liloan probed over contraband

CEBU, Philippines — Jail officers at Liloan Police Station’s detention facility are now being investigated after a recent greyhound operation yielded contraband, including shabu and cellphones.

Police Colonel Aladdin Collado, Cebu Police Provincial Office (CPPO) director, said he has directed the chiefs of police in other police stations in the province to regularly conduct greyhound operations in their detention cells following the Liloan incident.

The CPPO intelligence unit that conducted the greyhound in Liloan last Saturday seized at least 19 cellular phones, 11 of which were keypad phones while eight were smartphones.

Also seized were two rims of cigarettes, cellphone chargers, tattoo equipment, P2,500 in cash, and two sachets of suspected shabu.

Because of this, Collado has ordered his men in the investigation branch to place the jail officers in Liloan under investigation to find out how such contraband were sneaked in.

“I directed my investigation officer namin to conduct investigation on the matter at kung sino yung mga involved dito,” said Collado.

Collado added that it is supposed to be the jail officers’ responsibility to check the items that the visitors bring in for the detainees.

“The responsibility of the jailers is to see to it that all items should be checked. It will serve as a warning to everybody. We are not tolerating this act na nagpapabaya sila,” said Collado.

He said the recent greyhound was in coordination with the chief of police of Liloan.

The CPPO chief said that among the things to be seen during the investigation is the method by which such illegal items were brought inside.

Collado further said that they will not tolerate such actions as he assured an impartial investigation on the matter. — JMD (FREEMAN)
