City Council approves Mahiga River desilting

CEBU, Philippines —  The Cebu City Council has interposed no objection to the Mahiga River desilting project and provision of fence encasement particularly designed for the bridge near the Ayala access road going to M.J. Cuenco Avenue.

Councilor Jerry Guardo sponsored a resolution regarding the matter which was approved by the City Council.

The proponent was tasked to coordinate with the Cebu City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CCENRO) for the necessary documentary requirements.

Guardo said a team of engineers from R-Pitogo Builders commissioned by the Cebu Business Park presented a design for the Mahiga River desilting and provision of fence encasement.

Desilting is the process of removing suspended silt from the water of a stream.

“The said project is their compliance to their commitment to the government to help and maintain the cleanliness and protect the easement of our rivers and creeks pursued by the city government together with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and other agencies,” said Guardo.

Guardo said flood prevention and control constitutes formulation of activities that shall prevent, control, and mitigate the effects of floods and storms.

The councilor said it was observed that the river streams, drainage, and waterways in the city need to be innovated in order to be responsive to the new normal of flood waters and to be adaptive to the climate change situations. — GMR  (FREEMAN)
