CEBU, Philippines — The national government has assured the city that it will shoulder the tuition fee of the proposed Cebu City College (CCC).

Dr. J Prospero “Popoy” De Vera III, Chairman of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), has assured Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella that the tuition fees of the CCC students will be subsidized by the national government.

The CCC will offer four-year programs on solid waste management, environmental management, water system, flood control, nutrition science, hospital administration, traffic systems and nursing.

Two-year vocational programs will also be offered that include welding, caregiving, hotel and service management and sustainable farming and robotics.

“This will pave way for our people to have access to education whether technical, vocational or academic education. So I hope the council will understand our sincere efforts that once and for all, by all means, we should have our own city college,” said Labella.

As the National Chairman of the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP), Labella had mentioned in one of their meetings that the other members were surprised to find out that Cebu City doesn’t have its own city college, unlike all the cities in Metro Manila.

“It is long overdue. That’s why I appeal to the council to please take an objective look on this,” said Labella.

Aside from the tuition fees that the national government will shoulder and the funds that the city will allocate, foreign investors are reportedly also willing to assist the city, Labella said.

The Ramos Public Market might serve as the temporary location of the CCC but the government is still deciding between Lorega or the SRP as the permanent location.  GAN (FREEMAN)
