DWUP to clear fire-stricken areas
CEBU, Philippines — The Division for the Welfare of the Urban Poor (DWUP) is set to clear the fire-stricken areas in Barangay Ermita, Cebu City in preparation for the reblocking.
Houses gutted by fire will be tore down within this week to clear the area from any obstruction, said DWUP Operations Chief Genevieve Alcoseba.
“We need to clear the area because it is already considered a hazard,” she said.
On February 5, a fire hit three sitios— Bato, Vendor, and Kastilaan— in Ermita, a densely populated village, razing over 100 houses and displacing 658 families or 2, 686 individuals.
It was the fourth time Sitio Bato was hit by a fire.
Alcoseba said the fire victims have agreed to reblock the fire-stricken sitios during a consultative meeting last Saturday.
The reblocking scheme will allow the establishment of wider roads to provide more access to fire trucks and other vehicles in times of emergencies. The scheme, however, will reduce the lot allocations of some families owing to the provision of access roads. — KBQ (FREEMAN)
